We have held versions of this workshop many times for those working in the National Health Service, adjusting themes and texts to our participants. During the course of the sessions we draw on a variety of literary texts, ranging from Kafka to Raymond Carver, Susan Sontag to T. S. Eliot. The seminar is limited to eighteen participants, and our day's discussions centre on a number of themes including:
- the question of medical authority
- the relationship between metaphor and medicine
- the idea of well-being
The conversations avoid a narrowly theoretical approach. The day-to-day realities of general practice, with all its moments of desperation, inspiration, doubt and comedy, will be central to our discussions. There is also an additional session with a guest lecturer. A review of this workshop was published in the British Journal of General Practice in April 2013.
